- 2 cups dried pinto beans
- 6 cups water
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 1 tablespoon garlic minced
- 1 smoked ham hock or 1 cup chopped ham
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder optional
- 1 bay leaf
Rinse the beans in cold water.
Soak beans in water overnight.
Drain and rinse the next day.
Put beans and water in a big pot.
Add onion, garlic, and ham.
Add salt, pepper, sugar, and bay leaf.
