- 4 Large Green Tomatoes
- 1/2 Cup All-purpose Flour
- 2 Large Eggs
- 1/4 Cup Buttermilk
- 1 Cup Cornmeal
- 1/2 Cup Vegetable Oil
- 1 Tsp Salt
- 1/2 Tsp Black Pepper
Slice your green tomatoes into thick rounds. Make them about half an inch thick. Season both sides with salt and pepper now.
Set up your three breading stations. Put flour in the first shallow bowl. Mix eggs and buttermilk in the second bowl. Put cornmeal in the third bowl.
Dredge a tomato slice in the flour. Shake off any extra flour gently. Dip the slice into the egg mixture. Ensure it is fully coated on both sides.
Press the slice into the cornmeal. Coat it well so it is very crunchy. Repeat this for all your tomato slices. Place them on a clean plate.
Heat the oil in your large skillet. Use medium-high heat for the best results. Place the slices in the hot oil carefully. Do not crowd the pan while frying.
Fry each side for three minutes. They should look golden brown and crispy. Move them to a plate with paper towels. Serve them while they are still hot.
- Use very firm green tomatoes for the best texture.
- Do not slice the tomatoes too thin or thick.
- Keep the oil temperature steady at 350 degrees.
- Season the flour with extra spices for more kick.
- Serve the fried tomatoes immediately for maximum crunch.
- Use a cast iron skillet for the most even browning.
