  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 4 cups cubed bread day-old bread works best
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • ½ cup cooked spinach or diced bell pepper optional
  • ½ cup cooked bacon or sausage optional

Instructions

Prepare the Baking Dish

  • Grease the baking dish with butter. This prevents sticking and adds flavor.

Cook the Fillings

  • If using onions, bacon, or vegetables, cook them lightly in a pan. This makes them soft and adds flavor to the dish.

Layer the Bread

  • Place the cubed bread evenly in the baking dish. This forms the base of the strata.

Add the Fillings

  • Spread the cooked onions, vegetables, or bacon over the bread. Add half of the shredded cheese on top.

Make the Egg Mixture

  • In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth.

Pour the Egg Mixture

  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and fillings. Gently press the bread so it soaks up the liquid. Sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top.
