Aluminum foil
- 4 Lbs Russet Potatoes
- 2 Cups Heavy Cream
- 4 Tbsp Unsalted Butter
- 3 Tbsp All-purpose Flour
- 3 Cloves Garlic
- 1.5 Cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese
- 1 Cup Gruyère Cheese
- 1 Tsp Fresh Thyme
- 1 Tsp Salt
- 1/2 Tsp Black Pepper
Peel your potatoes and wash them under cold water. Slice them into very thin rounds using your slicer.
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit right now. Grease your large baking dish with butter or oil.
Melt your butter in the saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for one minute.
Whisk in the flour to create a thick paste. Cook it for two minutes to remove the raw taste.
Slowly pour in the heavy cream while you whisk. Let the sauce simmer until it starts to thicken.
Remove the pan from the heat and add cheese. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and smooth.
Place one layer of potatoes in the baking dish. Pour some of the cheese sauce over the top.
Repeat the layers until all the potatoes are gone. Make sure the top layer is covered in sauce.
Cover the dish tightly with a piece of foil. Bake it for forty-five minutes in the hot oven.
Remove the foil and add more cheese on top. Bake for twenty more minutes until bubbly and brown.
- Slice the potatoes to the same thickness every time.
- Do not skip the step of greasing your pan.
- Use fresh garlic instead of using the jarred kind.
- Let the dish sit for ten minutes before serving.
- Always use high-quality block cheese and grate it yourself.
- Season the sauce well with extra salt and pepper.
